Women of Color in TOS (without Brownface) Appreciation Pic Spam: Lieutenant Marlena Moreau (Mirror), as played by Barbara Luna

MARLENA: If I’m to be the woman of a Caesar, can’t I know what you’re up to?

Trivia: in interviews, Barbara Luna has remarked on how rare the opportunity to play a character who wasn’t defined solely by their ethnicity was for her in the 1960s. She credits her work on Star Trek with paving the way for actors of color today.

The casting of Cumberbatch was a mistake on the part of the producers. I am not being critical of the actor or his talent, just the casting —   Star Trek  actor Garrett Wang is coolly generating a discussion with his fans on the whitewashing in Star Trek Into Darkness on his twitter page. I would just love to beam somewhere. I haven’t transported anywhere yet and would love to do that. And, most importantly, I would like to see the solidification of the triumvirate. I always really enjoy those scenes where Bones and Spock and Kirk get to debate whatever the issue is, and I certainly hope that, on a forward-going basis, we get to see more of that. And I would really like to see more of the friendship between Bones and Kirk. —

…where the only useful thing she does is distinguish between Vulcan and Romulan and reference a transmission she overheard —

when you fuckers can distinguish between alveolo-palatal nasal, voiceless palatal nasal, voiceless velar nasal, and uvular nasal on sound alone, then you can come back and tell me Uhura’s useless and not qualified to serve on the enterprise (via fictionaladyfeels

#oh wait you mean to say #’when she does that thing that a COMMISSIONED STARFLEET OFFICER COULD NOT DO’ #and does it so well that the CAPTAIN OF THE FLEET’S FLAGSHIP #IMMEDIATELY PROMOTES YOU TO THE POSITION OF BRIDGE OFFICER #you meant that right #because that was fucking AWESOME #you little shits

Plus she had the intuition to intercept, translate and make particular note of the Klingon communication about the prison break.

Too many people think Uhura’s nothing but a sort of space secretary or something. But she’s a fucking specialist, in a very, very complex field, without which the Enterprise could not function. She is FOURTH IN COMMAND OF THE ENTERPRISE, and an officer of the bridge. She handles not only transmissions from outside the ship, but also all the internal ship’s communications and keeps the ship running smoothly. She’s a fucking codebreaker and encryption wizard in a bazillion fucking languages, and knows the ships computer systems better than anyone barring Spock. She can get down under her console and rewire shit with her own fucking hands. She knows how, and is fully prepared to, man the helm if the need arises.

tl;dr Uhura is better than whoever wrote that quote up there
