There’s, at the core, nothing wrong with ship questions or sexuality questions or fanon meta questions at conventions.

The problem is that I have literally never heard any of those formulated in a way that didn’t require a specific answer. The actors know what you want to hear and you put them in a situation where they can either comply or disappoint you. Either way, half of the audience will disagree with what they say.

Fanon exists for a reason—so writers can’t mess with it. Why would you ask for validation of your headcanon? The actors aren’t writing the show, for one, and they shouldn’t have to agree or disagree on your personal interpretation since it doesn’t really bring anything to the discussion. 

Please, please remember that not everyone ships what you ship. Some people get ulcers from hearing about Megstiel. Some people are on a strict Wincest-only diet. The vast majority of Supernatural fans don’t ship anything beyond what’s explicitly shown on screen. It’s extremely harmful to call that homophobia or close-mindedness. Not all queer Supernatural fans want a) people involved with the show infiltrating fandom-only zones and refuting their interpretations, or b) to witness panel hijacking by shippers when there’s a thousand questions that could be asked for which the actors’ input or knowledge would actually be meaningful.

As Creation Entertainment puts it, you represent all of the fandom when you ask a question. If you think your question is essentially a demand for endorsement, maybe it’s not appropriate to ask it in that kind of setting. It doesn’t justify disrespectful behavior from other fans, but it does justify the screening of similar questions in the future.
